From The Lab To The Lesson: Digital VARK

by venhi on December 16, 2009

Neil D. Fleming is legendary in his approach to our understanding of learning styles.  There are four categories of VARK, an acronym for Visual, Auditory, Reading, and Kinesthetic.  In terms of a learning style, an individual can be considered one type or a combination of all four.

My teaching experience has encountered all kinds of learners with varying degrees of sensory impact.  Some kids are more visual, some are more kinesthetic.  Ideally a unit should encompass all sorts of ways to “get the stuff to stick”.  I recall a time when I overdubbed the four DNA bases G, C, T and A to the Village People’s YMCA.  They were singing it for weeks, long after the exam.

The digital revolution enables all sorts of ways to target specific types of learners.  From e-music to educational games there are more ways to present content than ever.  Here are my results after taking the VARK questionairre.  It’s free, doesn’t require registration, and takes about 5min.  What type of learner are you?
